Bible Engagement

To help people engage with the scriptures,we design and implement various programs such as audio Scriptures and New Reader Portions for people who are not conversant with reading and Bible Study Portions / selections to address specific sitation like HIV/AIDS pandemic and other contemporary issues like corruption ,good gorvanance and peace.By their nature these programs and products are offered free of charge to people who need them.

Under this we have the following programs;

1) Literacy:

The project has excited young and old in Mukono Diocese as the pioneering diocese for this kind of ministry in the Mission of The Bible Society of Uganda. The Bible Society of Uganda together with Mukono Diocese started this programme with the purpose of empowering those who can not read and write with the skills so that they can read the Word of God by themselves.

It started in Jan 2006 by training 23 Instructors, who started sensitising, mobilizing and registering people in their respective communities. Now we have 74 trained instructors with over 1000 learners from all the five Archdeaconries of Mukono Diocese. They are facilitated with Bicycles for Instructors and teaching materials such as: chalkboards, chalk, exercise books, pencils, counter books, pairs scissors, manila etc.

2) FCBH(Faith Comes By Hearing);

What is faith comes by hearing (FCBH)? FCBH is a Bible listening program based on Romans 10:17 “Faith Comes By Hearing and Hearing by the Word of God.” FCBH aims to bring together a group, a congregation, a local church, a community, a language group, a literacy class, a natural group, a group of individuals, or a family to listen to a portion of the audio Bible in their mother tongue or a language they understand for at least 30 minutes each week. A consistent regular and continuous listening of the Bible on cassette would enable one to go through the entire New Testament at least once in about 40 weeks. The emphasis, which is on group listening and discussion, is to allow everyone’s questions to be answered and doubts about God’s word cleared.

Over the years, the Bible Society of Uganda has concentrated on the publication and production of the Bible in the print format. In its print format, the Bible has been published in ten (10) of the 52 languages of Uganda.

“The vision of FCBH is to have the Bible heard in every church or community every week in the heart language of the people.”

“The purpose of FCBH is to bring God’s Church together and to make disciples.”

3)HIV/AIDS Program;

In pursuance of our mission of helping people interact meaningfully with the Word of God, we have developed Bible-based application materials to encourage behavior change in order to reduce the HIV/ AIDS infection rate, stigma and discrimination with the support from SMC and Swedish Bible society. This gave us an opportunity to start an HIV/AIDS program directly run by the Bible society of Uganda. Currently we are conducting   three projects:

  1. Where is the Good Samaritan today? This is our main project currently being implemented targeting mainly the religious leaders.
  2. Take charge project-targeting youth in and out of school. This one is also being implemented countrywide.
  3. The Good Samaritan orphan support project targeting orphans to HIV/AIDS. This program is being implemented in Bbaale Kayunga and Luweero.

This program is directly working with churches and church related organizations to equip and provide them with biblical based resource materials in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We have been able to reach out to the four mainstream churches in Uganda that is the Catholic Church, church of Uganda, the seventh day Adventist church and the Pentecostal churches. The response has been very impressive and many of these have and are still demanding for more materials to be used in this work.

The program is focused on empowering and equipping the churches with resources and right information in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This is being done through the provision of trainers based on training of trainers’ strategy (TOT)
