HIV/AIDS Program

In pursuance of our mission of helping people interact meaningfully with the Word of God, we have developed Bible-based application materials to encourage behaviour change in order to reduce the HIV/ AIDS infection rate, stigma and discrimination with the support from SMC and Swedish Bible society. This gave us an opportunity to start an HIV/AIDS program directly run by the Bible society of Uganda. Currently we are conducting   three projects,
  1.  Where is the Good Samaritan today? This is our main program currently being implemented in the East and Northern Uganda.
  2. Take charge-targeting youth in and out of school. It’s being implemented in central region of Uganda
  3. The Good Samaritan orphan support project targeting orphans to HIV/AIDS. This program is being implemented in Bbaale Kayunga and Luweero.
This program is directly working with churches and church related organizations to equip and provide them with biblical based resource materials in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We have been able to reach out to the four mainstream churches in Uganda that is the Catholic Church, church of Uganda, the seventh day Adventist church and the Pentecostal churches. The response has been very impressive and many of these have and are still demanding for more materials to be used in this work.

The program is focused on empowering and equipping the churches with resources and right information in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This is being done through the provision of trainers based on training of trainers’ strategy (TOT).

PURPOSE OF INTERVENTION
In partnership with churches and other agencies, we will contribute to:
  • Behaviour Change: At the end of the intervention, people will have adequate knowledge and skills to make right decisions on how to live responsibly and avoid risky behaviour.
  • Greater Openness: the intervention will help people “break silence”, discuss openly issues of sexuality, and give correct guidance to children and youths. People will also be open to go for the HIV tests in order to know their HIV status.
  • Avoid discrimination and condemnation: The intervention will help the churches to change the wrong and condemning attitudes that have promoted stigma and discrimination to those infected with HIV/AIDS.
  • To renew the Church’s social responsibility: When churches are equipped with sufficient knowledge about HIV/AIDS, they will extend their social responsibility to the infected and affected without fear or bias.
  • Empowering communities and reduce on poverty and other social ills: The result of the intervention is to produce a healthy community, which will be engaged in productive economic activities.
