Literacy
The project has excited young and old in Mukono Diocese as the pioneering diocese for this kind of ministry in the Mission of The Bible Society of Uganda. The Bible Society of Uganda together with Mukono Diocese started this programme with the purpose of empowering those who can not read and write with the skills so that they can read the Word of God by themselves.
It started in Jan 2006 by training 23 Instructors, who started sensitising, mobilizing and registering people in their respective communities. Now we have 74 trained instructors with over 1000 learners from all the five Archdeaconries of Mukono Diocese. They are facilitated with Bicycles for Instructors and teaching materials such as: chalkboards, chalk, exercise books, pencils, counter books, pairs scissors, manila etc.

Achievements of literacy project
- Some of the people in Mukono Diocese have really caught the fire of the project including the community and church leaders.
- Some of them can now write and read short sentences and are doing well with numbers. Some of them went ahead and sat for the District examinations stage one.
- Others are being entrusted with responsibilities in their communities and churches.
- The project has strengthened some peoples’ faith in the Lord others have legalised their marriages in church, it has helped some people to improve their marital relationships and it has motivated some of the learners to start some small income generating projects to improve the financial status in their homes.
- Absenteeism and irregular attendance due to family responsibilities
- Poor sight due to age and other health complications
- Some instructors and learners are not very committed to the project
- Pray for more funds to sustain the project
- Pray for the BSU staff as they travel to visit new and make follow up of old groups
- Pray for the learners to be quick to learn
